She dared not trust him…

He was the most dangerous man in England. Darkly handsome. Superbly masculine. But even as he teaches her age-old mysteries—sensual mysteries—she can't let him break through her defenses…

Some secrets aren't hers to share.

He dared not trust her…

She was a mystery, a beautiful mystery—one crowned by a flame of deep auburn hair with azure blue eyes that seemed to read his soul. And Fox Grandquest, the seventh earl Grandquest, is challenged by her on every level—her intellect, her strength, her cunning, and she fires his blood as no other woman has before.

But to trust her would be madness.

To love her could cost him his honor, if not his life.

Dangerous to Love By Victoria Dark Cerridwen Press ebook, March 2006 ISBN #1-4199-0553-8 Cover art by Syneca 214 pages Setting: The Devon Coast, Dartmouth Harbor 1809 Ari’s mission was a difficult one. On Dartmouth Harbor, she stood among docked tall merchant ships in search of an earl she intended to kill. Her future, no doubt, would be in the hands of the English judges and would lead to her hanging. Her reputation was already lost, for she was wanted by the Crown as a French spy. When Fox Grandquest is within sight on his merchant vessel, the Midnight Dancer, Ari aims her pistol barrel at him and prepares to squeeze the trigger. For a few moments, they are engaged in a deadly conversation which she hopes will lead to Grandquest’s death. But as fate would have it, Ari’s plans are put to an end and in the ruckus she shots herself. She awakens in a strange, stylish home. Her head aches terribly, maids are screaming because her presence is unexpected. She feels the doctor is incompetent and strangely Grandquest appears concerned about her well being. In an effort to save her pretty little hide, she pretends she has amnesia. Her weakness and injury, though, are very real. Grandquest questions his men, who were hidden in a secret tunnel within Stonerose Manor. He is interested in learning about a Frenchman and a band of smugglers, which he learns the militia were unable to capture. He also wanted to know about French spies hiding in a cottage down the coast. His interest lies in locating the head of a spy ring. Fox also has a commitment to America, for he spent most of his life there. He considers himself an American. While Fox is taking care of business, actually doing a little investigating, he has his friends Ben and Toby keeping an eye on his mysterious house guest. It’s only a matter of time before Fox figures out who Ari is and the identity of a man named the “Dandelion.” DANGEROUS TO LOVE is extremely well written. Victoria Dark has a wonderful way of using words to make her story come alive. The dialogue and description carry you away to this time period making you think the characters are not fictional. I loved the mystery behind Dandelion and Dolpho, a man very close to Ari who she believes is dead. Secondary characters Ben and Toby are as special as Fox’s sister, Anne. Anne plays chaperone and, at first, thinks Fox is insane for having his house guest under the same roof with him. What you have woven into Dangerous to Love is mystery and suspense, a healthy portion of romance, a pinch of history and a lot of character. The only negative is Ari pretending to have amnesia. This book is worth your time. You’ll fall in love with Fox just like Ari did. Five spies out of five Denise Fleischer, gottawritenetwork.com
